How are we recreating our world?

You've stopped and paid attention. You've noticed. Something isn't right...hunger, suffering, injustice.... You've been moved with compassion. You are reimagining a particular corner of the world (just like MLK did when he gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech). You realize you have the power to recreate your world. How are you stepping into your dream? (Click on comments below to share and read the stories of others.)

One of the main reasons I am involved with theatre is because I have found that there is no better medium than drama to raise the consciousness of our community, and that is exactly what we are trying to do with The Chameleon Theatre Circle. All of our shows provoke thought, and force the audience member to examine his or her life in a different way. This fall we will be performing Talk Radio, a show about how our culture is driven by sensationalism, on February 14th we will be participating in V-Day (violence against women) with a production of The Vagina Monologues, and over Easter we will be performing Godspell with a message of hope. We will finish the season with American Daughter, a multi-cultural play that examines the life of minorities through witnessing the life of a woman struggling in male-dominated politics. Every year we hold a New Play Festival, which is a nationally known competition for new playwrights. We will be performing last years winner Crossing Event Horizon in the fall, and will hold the next contest in the spring. If you are interested in coming to see our plays, our website is http://www.chameleontheatre.org. If you have any idea for shows that we can perform that raise conciousness, please let me know (or post it here). Also, please support the new Burnsville PAC. It will be our home in the fall of 2008! You can do your part by writing letters to the editor. Art is the medium that can bring change!

As someone with a passion for performing, I found that growing up I didn't find a place to "fit in" until I found the choir and theatre programs in high school. These programs really nurtured my love for performing. I'm bothered by how many schools are having to make cuts to their arts programs, so myself and four of my friends are venturing out to help local schools fund their programs. We will perform a Musical Theatre cabaret at their school, and they will take the majority of the ticket sales to use for whatever needs their art departments have - more painting supplies, choir robes, band uniforms, a sound board, new lights, a piano, sheet music, whatever. Hopefully this will give some other student the opportunity to find a place to help them grow as well.
